After many flights, and many layovers, I am home from China. To say it was an amazing experience would be an understatement, to say it was life changing would be cliché but closer to the truth.

It was more than China, more than the games, more than the culture or the food, and more than the sum of its parts. It was personal. Its amazing what a few days alone on a distant continent can do to you; strip away the cell phone, perpetual email access, TV, radio, friends, family, the comfort of your own bed, and your perspective on things will change greatly.

After it was all done, I shot about 5 1/2 hours of tape, and took over 200 pictures, the pictures will be up soon, and the video will start to trickle in once I can go through it all. Thank you everyone who checked out the photoblog, and thanks to TripFilms for their financial support.

China Photos

Still Kicking

Hey Gang, I'm still here. I've received a few emails asking when my next video will be, honestly I'm not sure, I have some footage laying around that I may try and cut into an episode but don't hold your breath; I've been very busy with work and personal things over the past month or so (nothing bad, all very good). I have ideas lined up and once I get a few weeks free I'll be out there shooting more video. I don't want to spoil the surprise but I have really cool things planned that I'm hoping will plan out. Stay Tuned.

I've submitted my video to Travel Channel to be a guest on Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations, which is a travel show that I've been in love with for a few years. Its a contest and while the network people pick the winner, I'm sure a little help from the public could be a nice push in the right direction. I made a video and threw in some shots from some of my previous videos. Help me out by visiting the site, viewing the video, and giving me 5 gold stars.

Meeting the Mayor

My work for KHHB has been interesting so far, I've been traveling to places I wouldn't normally go and meeting quite a few people around town. The paperwork is in and processing for me to get a real-life, honest-to-goodness press pass. My imagination is reeling with ways to use it and get into all sorts of places to shoot some pretty neat video. We'll see how that goes, I'm also accepting suggestions for things people would like to see. Feel free to leave a comment here or send me an email directly @ dustrotter@gmail.com.
Big News

Hey gang, got some pretty big news. First off, while shooting my piece on Hilo I bumped into a reporter for Big Island Weekly. She was very nice and took my picture and there's a small write up in the paper and a plug for the site. (You can read the full article here)

In other news, the local TV station KHHB has hired me to shoot video around town on assignment, basically this means sending me to interview people or shoot specific locations that will be featured on the nightly news update. Now I won't be on camera so I'm not that famous... yet. But its a step in the right direction.

Tonight I went and covered the Hawaiian Democratic Caucus. It was quite interesting to see, there was a huge turn out and the local news is reporting record numbers for total ballots counted. I'll post a video hopefully in the next few days. And the best part? Someone actually recognized me.

"Hey haven't I seen you before?
Hawaii - Hilo Underwater

As promised, I've delivered; today I went downtown and shot some video of the flooding. From what I heard and saw the flooding was quite a bit worse on Saturday. Rain is still in the forecast for this week so if things get crazy here, I'll get it on tape and get it on line. I planned, shot and edited this video today its a little rough, so bear with me.

So whats the haps?

A few people have been asking me what I've been up to lately; well the last 2 weeks have been basically non-stop rain. And when I say non-stop I don't mean California non-stop which is cloudy skies and a few inches of drizzle. I mean heavy to torrential rains for probably 80 - 90% of the day. From what I've heard the downtown area (visible in the beginning of the Hawaii By Motorcycle Video) is totally flooded out. As a documentarian it's my responsibility to inform the public of whats going on. So I'm going to try and head down there tomorrow and get some video and photos of it and put it up here.
